GB PENNY BLACK ILLUSTRATED Cover 1840 BLUE *Nuneaton Union* Warwickshire. VERY RARE.
NEW DISCOVERY by Samwells in old-time collection. Never previously offered at a significant auction house. This example not recorded by Bodily, Jarvis & Hahn, who recorded just 5 other examples of this pictorial letter-sheet. Exceptionally Fine for an item of this type & period. Fine 1d Black Plate 6 (IL) with four good even margins well tied by THREE strikes of a red Coventry Maltese Cross for 25th January 1841. Noted by recipient as sent by Joseph Scrivener (one of the designers of the letter-sheet & noted in "J.S." initials at upper left of design). Two vertical filing folds as usual with all the known examples. Very clean & quite possibly the finest used example of this unusual early Pictorial envelope printed in blue. The design features BIRDS, ornamental fountains & FLOWERS. Please examine the X-Y/Reversed tone images to highlight how well tied the black actually is. A BEAUTIFUL EXHIBITION QUALITY item. Please look at all the scans to help form your own opinion.
