Jalapa June 11th 1848Dear SirI arrived here yesterday afternoon. The Division of Genl. Shirley remained at Perote. Arriving to these leaving no transports at Vera Cruz. The Volunteers are still in the place [Jalapa] and will on daily expected to Vera Cruz but it will take some 3 or 4 weeks for the Army to get off, not much longer..... My family are all well and send you their kindest wishes. They fell into the hands of the robbers near Perote, but the robbers got but little and did not abuse the passengers in the least being satisfied with the pickings of the country and what was voluntarily handed them from sight. That is not very agreeable to fall into the hands of those fellows – which horde of American Robbers were on the road. But the most harm has been that of fears. The document if you have it ready will be hurt by the post to Jalapa. So that I may have it ready to send to Washington. My weight I understand (this here) expresses the paying. And as he is determined to continue in his city both a injuring my lady, and if I should might. By the Governor of Havana now and an Exemption put to him by the orders and wishes of the Company. I cannot mention hardly allow his name to go on the document. Let me know your opinion. I shall not go into any business here and do not know when I shall bring up, whether in the United States or in here. But I shall leave this broken Republic that is certain.I hope soon to see you in Jalapa.NB No gambling is allowed here – No American citizen that has been known to be gambling can stay here without going back to Mexico.
